He was predeceased by: his wife Ruth Huff Mayes; his son Michael Mayes; and his siblings, Nellie Parker and Robert Mayes. He is survived by: his sons, Robert Mayes (Shirlena), David Mayes (Kathy), Gerald Mayes (Teresa), Paul Mayes (Susan) and Mathew Mayes (Rosa). He is also survived by nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital.
