He was predeceased by: his father Dr. David G. Metzler; his former wife Martha Guadalupe Garibay-Metzler; his brother-in-law Joe Byler; and also Dale Ulrich. He is survived by: his wife Gwendolyn Metzler; his children, David Metzler (Brooke) of Bridgewater, Dr. Genita Nolan (Tatum) of Bellingham, WA, Joey Metzler (Allison) of Bridgewater and Clara Metzler (Evan Bullard) of Mt. Solon; his brother Steve Metzler (Karen); his sisters-in-law, Diane Metzler, Laurel Byler and Suzanne Peterson (David); and his grandchildren, Mikayla Laura Metzler, Cedar Daniel Nolan, Lily Clara Nolan, Josie Jean Metzler, Sloane Lea Metzler and Ginger Metzler Bullard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Massanutten Regional Library or the Blue Ridge Children's Museum in honor of Dan's lifelong curiosity and love of reading.

“My name is Marshall Griffith. I knew Dan at Emory University 1978-1980. He and I had philosophical conversations and a few outdoor adventures. Dan took me on a camping trip in north Georgia. He'd been there before and was eager to share. Here is a photo of Dan standing at the base of a very beautiful falls in the Spring. I call it Appalachian Spring . When I left Emory Dan and Tom Flynn bought me dinner the night before. I contacted Dan again 1986-88 when I was at UVA.”
