He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Jenkins Abernethy and Iva Deane Cloninger Abernethy; and his siblings, Clarence Jenkins Abernethy Jr., Robert M. Abernethy, C. Pat Abernethy, Mary Louise Abernethy Jones and Carolyn Abernethy Kannon.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Childress Abernethy; his children, Martha Jean Abernethy, Thomas Dean Abernethy Jr., Christine A. Cook (Darryl) and Robert Bruce Abernethy (Marsha); his granddaughters, Rachel Schnorr (Will), Sarah Powel (Devin), Rebekah Cook, Anna Abernethy and Claire Abernethy; and his great grandchildren, Landon, Adalyn, Liesel, Bentley and Janie.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Immanuel Baptist Church (3601 Monument Ave, Richmond, VA 23230). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 27th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Thursday, February 27th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery (10300 Pridesville Rd, Amelia Court House, VA 23002).
