She was predeceased by: her parents, Robert Whitaker, Sr. and Bernice Arnett Whitaker; her brothers, Robert Whitaker Jr. and Obadiah Whitaker; and her daughter Darshell D. Melvin-Hines.
She is survived by: her husband Robert S. Melvin, Jr.; her son Denzel Melvin; her grandchildren, Malcolm X. Hines (Rebecca) and Erica Melvin; her great grandchild Myaa Collins; her brothers, Thomas Whitaker and Gerald Whitaker (Lillie); and her siblings-in-law, Janice Whitaker and Rev. Irvin D. Melvin (Shearline). She is also survived by other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
