He is survived by: his wife Betty Britton Johnston; his sons, George H. "Bert" Johnston, Jr. and James M. "Mitch" Johnston (Sonya); and his grandchildren, James, Travis (Natalie), Trent (Valerie), A. J. and Sydney Johnston. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to All Souls Episcopal Church.
