He is survived by: his wife Mildred Harris Walker; his children, Melba Walker Banks (Harvey Lawrence) of Virginia Beach, VA, Melvin James, III of Hopewell, VA, Cheryl James Smith of Petersburg, VA and Sonja James of Petersburg, VA; his siblings, Chester Walker (Shirley Beasley) and Consur Coles (late James Coles); and his siblings-in-law, Franklin Harris, Henry Harris, Ruth Reed, Emma Ruffin (Ralph), Ethel Wheat and Karen Hinton (Carrol). He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.
Viewing was held on Saturday, January 11th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home - Petersburg Chapel (530 S Sycamore St, Petersburg, VA 23803). A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 12th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Sunday, January 12th 2025 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church (9308 Cox Rd, Ford, VA 23850).
