He was predeceased by: his wife Betty Goodman Sims; and his son Gary Michael Sims. He is survived by: his sons, James "Jay" Sims of Rural Retreat, John Sims of Rural Retreat and Joe Sims (April) of Rural Retreat; his granddaughters, Kenzie Sims and Kylie Sims; and his nephew Billy Maiden. He is also survived by husband, and a good father and grandfather.
