He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles and Margaret; his siblings, Charles, Tommy and Jean Smith; and his nephew Curtis Grooms.

He is survived by: his wife Sandra; his children, Monica Barry (Sterling) and Robert, Jr. (Tracie); his grandsons, Tyler McNeer and Andrew Grooms; and his stepgrandchildren, Mitchell and Katelynn Loving.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org or to the Parkinson's Association at parkinsonfoundation.org.
