He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Shoemaker and Mildred Shoemaker; his sisters, Mildred "Ann" Poe and Betty Lou Robbins; and his significant other Norma Shoemaker.

He is survived by: his children, Shirley Morris (Chuck) of Monroe, Teresa Evans (Steve) of Newport News, Richard Shoemaker Jr. of Salem, Tammy Hamlett (Rodney) of Evington, Chris Burks of Campbell County and Randy Burks of Campbell County; his siblings, Sandra Robbins, Albert Shoemaker of Madison Heights and Roy Shoemaker of Madison Heights; his grandchildren, Mike (Jessie), Ashley (Rondell), Thomas (Michelle), Brandon (Connor Kennedy), William, Joey, Cheyenne, Dalton, Joshua, Cody, Christopher, Raven and Dakota; his great grandchildren, Amanda, Landon, Lynnix, Makenzie, Victoria, Lexie and Ivy; his close friend Judy Cash; and his pet Missy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
