He was predeceased by: his wife Carolyn Cyrus Childress; his parents, Thomas Ennis and Ethel Howard Childress; his son Randall Eugene Childress; and his siblings, Melvin Childress, Garland Childress, Leonard Marshall and Mildred Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Wanda C. Cunningham (Gerald) and Ronnie E. Childress of Madison Heights; his sisters, Nancy C. Harris of Appomattox, Patricia C. Flynn of Keysville and Lois C. Goin of Burkeville; his grandsons, Steven Eugene Staley (Debbie McCormick) and Jeffrey Michael Staley (Brittany); his great grandchildren, Justin Owen Staley, Brandon Eugene Staley and Scottie Gray; his niece Chrystal Page; and his close friend Jean Powell.
