She was predeceased by: her husband John Albert Carter; her parents, Gordon Robert Mays, Sr. and Carrie Hazel Hudson Mays; her brother Gordon Robert Mays, Jr.; and her sister-in-law Dolly Eberhardt (Jim).

She is survived by: her daughters, Beverly C. Conner (Jerry) of Forest and Suzanne C. Gillespie of Wilmington, NC; her grandchildren, John Carter Gillespie (Christina) of Wilmington, NC, Brittany Lauren Mistretta (Mike) of Huddleston, Laura Lynn Hagy (Hogan) of Wilmington, NC and Brandon Mays Conner of Forest; her great grandchildren, Hazel Grace Mistretta, Isaiah Mason Conner, Valan Gray Hagy, James Vincent Mistretta, Coral Rae Gillespie, Emery Ruth Conner, Merrick Gray Hagy, Carter Kyle Gillespie, Henry Michael Mistretta and Indie Gray Hagy; and her siblings, James Edward Mays (JoAnn) of Lynchburg and Joyce Mays Baker (Don) of Evington. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and her special sisters.
