She was predeceased by: her parents, Rufus G. Gray and Martha Virginia Thornton Gray; her husband Leonard Leo Smith; her son Mark Wendell Smith; and her siblings, Vivian McGinley, Hervy L. Gray, Sterling Thornton Gray, Alfred G. Gray and Rufus G. Gray, Jr..
She is survived by: her daughters, L. Helen Smith and Christie Smith Rapp (Donald "Chip"); her grandchildren, Cheryn Rapp, Laura Schorpp Rapp (Kristen) and Bryan Rapp; and her great grandchild Milo Gray Rapp.
Visitation was held on Saturday, November 2nd 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Heritage Funeral Service (427 Graves Mill Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502). A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 2nd 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Heritage Funeral Service & Crematory (427 Graves Mill Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502). A graveside service was held on Sunday, November 3rd 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Olive Branch Cemetery (2 Cpl J M Williams Ave, Portsmouth, VA 23701). She was a survivor in all senses of the word, beating polio at age nine; losing her only son at age 29 to gun violence; conquering breast, thyroid, and skin cancer; and overcoming covid and RSV.
