George R. Smith Obituary
We are sad to announce that on February 26, 2023, at the age of 88, George R. Smith of Lawrenceville, Virginia passed away. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, George Lee Smith and Olivia Smith Coleman; and his brothers, Frank, Oris and Kenneth Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Vashie R. Smith; his children, Sandra M. Smith, MD, Gwendolyn Fields (Barton) and Brian A. Smith; his siblings, Agnes Land, Freddie Smith (Patsy) and Lenwood Coleman (Brenda); and his siblings-in-law, Gloria Smith, Roslyn Holder, Gladys Taylor, Mary Giles, Louise Goodrich and John Rawlings (Sandra). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Along with James A. Smith and Charles White, two other Brunswick County champions of civil liberties and civil rights, one of the contributions to his community of which he was particularly proud was his success in helping expand voting access to his fellow Virginians.
