He was predeceased by: his wife Barri Emelie Schmidlapp; and his parents, Avis Mapes and John Mapes. He is survived by: his sons, Gene Jr. (Sue) and Scott Mapes (Andrea); his sister Judy Mapes Schmidlapp; his grandchildren, Virginia Mapes, Anne Mapes Younker (Austin), Elisabeth Mapes Noel (Aaron), Kathryn Mapes Sullivan (Josh), Mackenzie, Madison and McGuire Saffin; his great grandchildren, Mary Emelie Sullivan and Thomas Gene Noel; his niece Jessica Schmidlapp; and his nephew Jacob Schmidlapp IV.
