He was predeceased by: his parents, Hunter Marshall and Emma DeFord Hancock; his brother Marshall DeFord Hancock; and his children, Judith Maxine Hancock and James Walter Hancock.

He is survived by: his wife Elner Hamlett Hancock; his children, Robert Hunter Hancock Sr., Linda H. Hicks, Janet H. Slaw and Carolyn H. Amos; his close friends, Bill Childress, Tom Hale and Charky Paulette "Chocolate"; his niece Sheila Jones; and his daughter Ginny Elder. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two nieces.
