He is survived by: his wife Thelma Rutledge Adkins; his sister Frances Gay (Bill) of St. Louis, MO; his children, Susan Jaynes (Lee) and Merle Thayer Adkins IV (Lyn) of Raleigh, NC; his stepson Michael Gentry (Joan); his grandchildren, Caroline Adkins, Ren Adkins and Drew Jaynes; and his caregiver Karen Griffin. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
