He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest W. Carter and Emma Chambers Carter; his wife Barbara S. Carter; his sister Anne Carter Parks; and his grandson Andrew Carter Sloan.
He is survived by: his children, Denise Carter-O'Gorman (Stephen) of Cleveland, Ohio, Melanie Carter-Maguire (Frank) of Irvington, Virginia, Lauren Carter Campbell (Kevin) of Brattleboro, Vermont and Ernest W. Carter, III (Tad) of New York; and his grandchildren, Alison Weber Maguire of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Katharine Carter O'Gorman of Cleveland, Ohio, Ian O'Keefe Campbell of San Diego and Colin Spencer Campbell of Brattleboro, Vermont..
