With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Cleopatra Gaines Fortune of Hustle, Virginia, who passed away on July 16, 2023 at the age of 92. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
She was predeceased by: her parents, Bennie Gaines and Rosa Gaines; her husband Russell; her siblings, Morrell, Herman, Clinton, Bennie, Oscar, Hollis, Velna, Eunice, Lorraine and Jacqueline; her son-in-law Samuel Mayes; her grandson Matthew Mayes; and her great grandchild Micah Phillips.
She is survived by: her children, Dwight, Shelby, Yogi, Bruce, Ken, Sherald Mayes and Kathy Fortune; her siblings, Clara Byrd, Trent and Hugh Gaines; her daughter-in-law Lana Fortune; and her sisters-in-law, Helen and Emily Gaines. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and adored friends.
Her favorite movie was "The Wizard of Oz."Cleo attended St. Stephen's Baptist Church (SSBC) regularly until the pandemic in 2020.
