He was predeceased by: his mother Doris Elliott Short; and his brother Ralph Lee Short. He is survived by: his father William Richard "Dickie" Short, Sr. of Hurt; his wife Tina Dalton Short; his children, William Richard Short III (Molly) of Chatham, Brian Dalton of Gretna, Angela Yeatts of Dry Fork and Toni Epperson of Gretna; and his brothers, Robert Short of Hurt, Ray Short of Hurt and Randy Short of Hurt. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
