He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Simpson and Ocie Wade Simpson; his wife Mildred Elizabeth "Liz" Hendricks Simpson; and his sister Jewel Wade. He is survived by: his children, Jean Hatcher (Steven) of Hurt, Tiffany Simpson and Jerry Simpson of Roanoke; his sister Cindy Lewis (Jerry) of Stuart; his grandchildren, Hollie Catron, Derek Catron (Brittany), Samantha Owen (Adam), Dustin Simpson and Justin Simpson; and his great grandchildren, Carolyn Shelton and Tara Moore.
