He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Fitzhugh Smith, Sr. and Florence Hodge Smith; his son Charles R. Smith; and his siblings, Betty Hooker and William Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Carolyn Carpenter Smith; and his sons, Johnny E. Smith, Sr. (late Phyllis) of Mount Airy, NC, William R. Smith, Sr. (Betty) of Hillsville, VA and Kenneth L. Smith (Donna) of Mount Airy, NC. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
