He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Basil Earl and Cordelia Helton James; and his brothers, Rev. C. A. James, David Harley James and Donald James.
He is survived by: his wife Ruth Ann James; his son Jerry James (Lisa) of Tazewell; his siblings, Lee James of Richlands, Helen Miller of Richlands and Earlene Yates (Clarence) of Council; his stepchildren, Roy Hurt of Swords Creek and Mary Hurt of Shortts Gap; his granddaughter Emily James of Tazewell; and his stepgrandchildren, Nathaniel Brown of Tazewell, Shawn Royal of Bandy, Alex Royal of Shortts Gap, Courtney Roberts of Swords Creek, Christopher Hurt of Swords Creek and Brandon Hurt of Wytheville. He is also survived by six step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
