He was predeceased by: his parents, Angie Cundiff Brown and Joseph Daniel "J. D."; his wife Joyce Vuncannon Brown; and his siblings, Bernice Richardson, Brady Brown and Orrie Brown.
He is survived by: his son Todd Brown (Robin); his brother Calvin Brown (Olene); his grandchildren, McKenzie Brown Abbott (Ben) and Madison Brown; and his nieces, Kathy Milley (Steve) and Penny Hill (Jim).
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Virgil's memory to Brushy Mountain Gun Club (1813 Izaak Walton Rd, Hurt, Virginia, 24563).
