He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Mary Ellen Spitler Brake; his parents, Fred E. Brake and Ethel Grace Sprenkle Brake; his son Thomas; his daughter-in-law Linda Brake; his daughters, Mary (Garland Cash) and Martha (Marvin Gwin); his grandchildren, Travis (Benita), Justin (Shannon), David Gwin and Sarah Bedgood; his great grandchildren, Wyatt Bedgood, Sloane, Cora, Carson, Paisley and Micah Brake; his sister Bonnie Geesaman; his niece Bobbie Ann Murphy; and his caregiver Melanie Ryder.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his memory may be sent to the Greenville United Methodist Church Cemetery fund (126 Main St., Greenville, VA 24440) or Cat's Cradle (122 South Main St., Harrisonburg, VA 22802) as John and Mary Ellen never denied a stray animal food.
