He was predeceased by: his parents, Joel Coates and Ellen Mae Haywood Coates; and his siblings, Barbara Lewis Vaughn, Dallas Hansford and Walter Lee Coates.
He is survived by: his children, Merecia Wiggins (Tommy), Melvin Coates, Jr. (Diana) and Dorinda Smith (Billy); his grandchildren, Stacey Noble (Jay), Davey Wiggins (Hayley), Brittney Nelson (Kadeem), Christopher Coates, Kayla Coates, Daniel Coates (Melodie), Michael Coates (Brittany), Brandon Meade, Cody Smith, Colton Smith and Savannah Jenkins; and his brothers, Wilford "Wick" Coates and Joel Coates, Jr.. He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren.
