He was predeceased by: his father George R. Hayes. He is survived by: his wife Betty Underwood Hayes; his mother Betty Simms Hayes; his sons, Joel Hayes (Sally) and James Hayes; his stepsons, Field Shepherd (Melissa) and Cameron Shepherd (Natalie); his stepgrandchildren, John, Sadie, Alex, Paul, Silas Hayes and Locksley; his stepsons, Trip, Mason, Eli and Winston Shepherd; his siblings, Paul Hayes and Claire Brant (Robert); and his nephew George Brant.
