He was predeceased by: his parents, Hobart Oakley Agee and Lorene Walker Gore Agee. He is survived by: his children, Eva Frances, James Oakley Jr., Lula Ann, Terry Morris and Joe Louis; his sister Virginia; his wife Adelaide Lewis; his family, Carroll Carter (Mildred), Gwendolyn Mitchell (Walter), Arthur Carter (Elaine), Carl Carter, Sr. (Shirley), Maxine McNeal (Dennis), Larry Carter (Eddine), Francine Thomas (Tony) and Debra Agee Powell (Jarrett); his siblings, Lula "Syb" Agee Gaskins (Robert) and Terry "Ted" Agee; and his sisters-in-law, Harolyn Smith (Roland) and Lucille Stallings. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
