He was predeceased by: his parents, Carey G. Athey and Rebecca Athey; and his siblings, Dorothy Nance, Helen Jenkins, Jack and Virgil Athey.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara L. Athey; his children, Robert R. Athey, Jr. (Cyndi) of Sneads Ferry, NC, Michelle Athey Davis (Larry) of Front Royal, VA and Renee D. Athey of Front Royal, VA; and his sisters, Loretta Bowen of Mooresville, NC and Roberta Greene of Wilmington, NC.. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
