He was predeceased by: his parents, Vincent Swinney and Anna Hodge Swinney; and his wife Debra Johnson Swinney. He is survived by: his daughter Misty; his son-in-law Danny Pell of Mt. Airy; his sons, Daniel Swinney of Fries, Virginia and Travis Kinzer of Galax, Virginia; and his siblings, Joyce Moxley of Galax, Virginia, Junior Swinney and Timmy (Cindy Swinney). He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
