He was predeceased by: his wife Virginia Minter; his parents, Ernest F. Wharton and Bertha Harding Wharton; his brother Joseph F. Wharton; and his friend Benjamin "Wilson" Stevens.
He is survived by: his sons, Walter E. Wharton, Bruce Scott Wharton, Sr. and Earl Thomas Wharton, Jr. (Laura); his grandchildren, Alyssa, Madison, Haley, Hunter, Scott and Cole; his great grandchildren, Leon, Sloane and August; his siblings, E. Michael Wharton (Libby) and Sally D. Wharton; his sister-in-law Virginia Wharton; and his music buddy Karen Bayer. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mary Washington Hospice (2300 Fall Hill Avenue, Suite 401, Fredericksburg, VA 22401).
