He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Underwood Gilbert and Carrie Trent Gilbert Carroll; and his sons, Jesse Mearl Gilbert, Jr. and Sgt. Thomas Randall Gilbert. He is survived by: his wife Dolly Lindsey Gilbert; and his children, Cindy Currin (Don), Tammy Blizzard (Steven), Kelly Agee (Marty), Lisa Mayberry and Todd Vaughan (Vicky). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
