He was predeceased by: his parents, Arley Smith Carpenter and Ada Campbell Carpenter; and his siblings, Coy Carpenter, Hazel Shelton and Wilma Hall.

He is survived by: his wife Kate Moxley Carpenter; his son Kevin D. Carpenter (Jane) of Forest, VA; and his sister Josephine Hall of Marion, VA.
