He was predeceased by: his parents, Hassel Bland and Mary Whitt Sumner; his wife Sandra Ann Bailey Sumner; and his sisters, Dorothy Allene Mabry and Betty Jennelle.
He is survived by: his children, Melissa Montague Sumner Swisher (Shawn) of Staunton, Ann-Rochelle Sumner of Harrisonburg and Sean Derek Sumner (Lori) of Switzerland; and his grandchildren, Mallory Ann Swisher, Hayden Sumner, Zabe Sumner Hameed and Evan Sumner. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
