He is survived by: his wife Lynn; his son John, Jr.; his daughter-in-law Melody; his grandchildren, John III and Morgan; his stepsons, Scott Smith (Veronica) and Steven Smith (Cassie); and his stepgrandchildren, Connor and Adrian.

He donated his time when his son was young helping coach baseball and soccer, and was an intense Washington Redskins fan.
