He was predeceased by: his wife Thelma Mellender (Davis); his siblings, Joanne (Carl "Billy") and John (Josephine); and his parents, George Mellender and Jennie Mellender.

He is survived by: his children, Barbara, David (Ann) and Amy; his grandchildren, Richard, Daniel (Christy) and Julianne (Neil); and his great grandchildren, Jordan, Annalisa, Richard, Emma, Austin, Madeline and Aden. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces.
