It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Melvin Atlas Banks Sr. of Emporia, Virginia, who passed away on February 11, 2024, at the age of 82, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Solomon Banks and Alma Atkins; his wife Gloria Banks; his siblings, Christine, Earnest, Martha and Larry Banks; and his grandson Tenell.
He is survived by: his great grandchildren, Lembia and Ja'Mia; his children, Sandra Garrett (Daniel), Rose Banks Simmons, Thelma Banks, Pamela Banks-Smith, Melvin Banks Jr., Aretha Banks Ellsworth and Eric Carpenter; his sisters, Rose Ella Swann-Mamak and Ellen Gilliam; his siblings-in-law, Emma Banks, Paulette Banks, Carl Simmons Sr. and James Simmons; his goddaughters, Mary Ann Daniels, Marion Andrews, Melinda Young, Latrice Stallings, Sylvia Lee, Margaret Adams and Laverne Goode-Lewis; and his nephews, Ernest Banks Jr., Larry Banks Jr., Derrick Banks and Marcus Garris. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
