He was predeceased by: his parents, Lloyd Bertholf and Martha Bertholf; his sister Mabelyn Bertholf Westcott (Lynn); and his former wife Nancy Layman Bertholf. He is survived by: his wife Joan Bowers Bertholf; his brother-in-law John Layman; his nieces and nephews, Susan Bertholf LaRose (Lenny), Carol Bertholf Guessford (Michael), Roger Lloyd Bertholf (Marsha) and Kevin Lowell Bertholf (Kris); his adoptive son Ron Cassell (Chris); his grandchildren, Greg Jennings (Siobhan), Ryan Jennings, Erick Guessford, Jonathan Guessford, Aaron Bertholf (Kim), Abby Bertholf Sapp (Austin), Lindsey Bertholf Fasnacht (Charlie), Jessica Bertholf Nenner (Mike) and Amelia Cassell Evans (Cory); and his great grandchildren, Aibha, Cedar Jennings, Landon, Avery Fasnacht, Elliot Bertholf, Alden and Audrey Sapp.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 18th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Cloverdale Church of the Brethren (4708 Read Mountain Rd, Cloverdale, VA 24077).
