He was predeceased by: his parents, Ned Gilliam and Willa Hatcher Gilliam; his son Russell Gilliam; and his siblings, Robert Gilliam and Virginia Gilliam.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Gilliam; his children, Diane Gilliam, Crystal Briggs (James) and George Wendell Gilliam (Lisa); his grandchildren, Davon Gilliam, Taylor Gilliam, Corey Briggs, Devin Briggs and Briana Briggs; his great grandchildren, Nia and Nyla Gilliam; his sister-in-law Teresa Jones; and his nieces, Adriene and LeAndrea Gilliam.
