He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Preston Steele and Margaret Hanson Steele of Coeburn, Virginia.; his wife Mavin Martin; and his siblings, John Steele, Harry Steele, Robert Steele and Anne Pruner.
He is survived by: his son Marty Steele (Julie); and his grandchildren, Adam Steele (Shannon) and Carolyn Rasp (Matt). He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
