He was predeceased by: his parents, Daniel Jackson Matheney and Ida Mae Riley Matheney; his daughter Dawn Marie Spittler; and his siblings, Daniel "Buddy" Matheney, Howard "Wiggles" Matheney, Harmon Matheney, Emma Ross, Nettie Williams and Mable Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Elizabeth Huntington Matheney of Millboro; his children, John Wayne Matheney, Jr. (Bahereh) of Apex, NC, Lisa Via Compton (Jack) of Hot Springs and Susan Clark Kelley Monfils (Ron) of Lee, MA; his son-in-law Danny Spittler of Staunton; his siblings, Ruby Jane Williams of Staunton, Norma Swearengin (Carl) of Millboro and Ernest Matheney of Millboro; his grandchildren, Zachary Kelley, Alexander Compton, Rebekah Kelley, Samuel Kelley, Merrick Spittler and Owen Matheney; and his close friends, Wayne Williams, Jimbo Tentant, Timmy and Fern Plecker. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, Volunteers, P.O Box 637, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422 and to the Woodland Church Cemetery Fund, 347 McClung Drive, Millboro, Virginia 24460.
