He was predeceased by: his parents, John Wheeler and Charmine Ethel Clay (Crawford); his wife Frances Clay (Bell); and his siblings, Rufus Clay, Margie Lawson, Bud Clay, Ralph Clay and Bertha Bennett.
He is survived by: his children, James Robert "Buddy" Clay (Dot) of Baltimore and Patricia "Patti" Spahn (Jerry) of Churchville; his brother James Isaac Clay of Baltimore; his grandchildren, Jennifer Spahn-Lechmanik (Jason), Johnathan Spahn, Rob Clay and Jamie Clay; and his great grandchildren, Simon Spahn-Rodriguez and Max Spahn-Lechmanik. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
