He was predeceased by: his parents, Eli Puffenbarger and Ida Jane Puffenbarger (Eckard); his siblings, George Wilmer Puffenbarger, Raymond Carl "Jack" Puffenbarger, Cleta Jane Smith McCray, Ruby Pearl Spitzer and Margaret "Arlene" Hodge; and his close friend Cecilia Byrd Mays.
He is survived by: his children, Earl Puffenbarger (Terry) of Staunton and Darla Whitley (Ray) of Stuarts Draft; his siblings, Charles "Bud" Puffenbarger of Staunton and Norma Jean Eutsler (Homer) of Staunton; his grandsons, Brett Puffenbarger (Jody), A. J. Whitley and Philip Whitley; the mother of his children Opal Griffin Goble of Stuarts Draft; and his pets, Chip and Amber. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
