He was predeceased by: his parents, James F. Stells Sr. and Louise S. Stells; his brother Melvin T. Stells; and his son John David Stells. He is survived by: his wife Phyllis A. Stells; his sons, William Stells (Dawn Railey) and Mark Stells (Kathleen); his daughter-in-law Debbie Kunkel (Kevin); his grandchildren, Kaitlyn McCarthy (Cameron), Tony Stells (Paula) and Lindsay Kunkel; his great grandchild Kaiden McCarthy; his siblings, Vernon Stells and Judy Barrett (John); and his brother-in-law Robert Clark.
