He is survived by: his wife Patty Stokes; his children, James Stokes, Jr. (Lorraine), Atleacia Gibson (James) and Deborah Norris (Ross); his grandchildren, James Stokes, Jamal Gibson, Cameron Stokes (Annia), Jasmine Gibson, Caitlyn Stokes, Daijah Norris and Ross Norris; his great grandchildren, Aiden, Kendra, Yuri, Samia and Kiarah; and his siblings, Elsie Edmond, Earnestine Adams (George), Maxine Taylor (Donny Ray), Alphonso Stokes (Elaine) and Milton Stokes (Wanda).

Visitation was held on Thursday, April 10th 2025 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the J. T. Fisher Funeral Services (1248 George Washington Hwy N, Chesapeake, VA 23323). A funeral service was held on Friday, April 11th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Grove Church (5910 W Norfolk Rd, Portsmouth, VA 23703).
