He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret F. Raines Matthews (Mag); and his siblings, Paul (Pee Wee) of Norfolk, Virginia., Alice (Turkey) of Norfolk, Virginia., Jesse of Norfolk, Virginia., Norman of Norfolk, Virginia. and Raymond of Norfolk, Virginia..

He is survived by: his children, Tim Matthews, Brenda Matthews (Teenie), Jan Browne (Maurice) and Marci Vanhorn (Steve); and his grandchildren, Ronnie Keeter, Angie Rigdon and Sherry Baker. He is also survived by seventeen great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Heart Association.
