He was predeceased by: his father Charles S. Bumgarner, Sr.; and his wife Elizabeth Motley Bumgarner of Chatham. He is survived by: his daughter Mary Ann McKinnon; his son-in-law John Ross McKinnon; his grandsons, Charles K. McKinnon and John Motley McKinnon; his brother Carroll Bumgarner of Chatham; and also Abigail Cosgriff. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
