He was predeceased by: his wife Ginny; his close friend Laura Fisher; and his brothers, Joseph and Sayre. He is survived by: his sons, David Gilliam Schatz (Susan Papa) of New Haven, CT, Peter Joseph Schatz (Leilani Miller) of Marina, CA and Jonathan Harry Schatz (Mary) of Miami, FL.; his grandchildren, Annakate, Claudia, Daniel, Andrew, Paul and Madeline; and his sister-in-law Proletta Schatz. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
