James Allen Payne Obituary
James "Jimmy" Allen Payne passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on September 3, 2024. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 52 years, Linda "Susie" Payne; daughters Kelly (Michael) Hudgins and Erin (Erik) Irtenkauf; grandchildren Meredith and Kendall Hudgins, Owen and Avery Irtenkauf; sister Karen (Edward) Tennyson; sister-in-law Betty Elliton; niece Lindsey Tennyson; nephew Ken Elliton, as well as many extended family members and friends.
Born April 16, 1950, Jimmy was the first child of Elizabeth and James F. Payne of Charlottesville. He was later joined by his little sister, Karen, and grew up with a group of neighborhood friends that became like brothers to him. Jimmy met Linda "Susie" Elliton and they were married September 23, 1972. Together they built a home, a family, and a strong faith that carried their love through all stages of life. Jimmy was a loving father to daughters Kelly and Erin and later became a doting "Granddaddy" with the arrival of his four grandchildren.
Jimmy was a graduate of Lane High School, served six years in the Virginia Army National Guard, and ultimately retired after a 43-year career with the local phone company. While he took pride in his work, he most cherished the friendships he built there that, in retirement, kept Jimmy's calendar full of hunting, fishing, and fellowship. Jimmy always felt closest to God in the outdoors. He loved spending time at the hunting cabin or on fishing trips, telling stories and sharing a good meal.
Above all, Jimmy's life was defined by sharing the joy of Christ through service to others. He was always giving with his time and energy to help anyone in need and was a dedicated leader at New Bethel United Methodist Church. Jimmy meant so much to so many and will be missed beyond measure.
The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Service from 5:00 -7:00 PM on Monday, September 9th, and a service will be held at Hill and Wood on Tuesday, September 10th at 10 AM, with interment to follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
