He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Lewis Howard and Maggie M. Barbour; his former wife Doris Smith Howard of Charlottesville; his brothers, Lankston Lewis Howard and Nelson A. Howard; and his cousin Dale Barbour.
He is survived by: his children, Darrell J. Howard of Barboursville, Cranston V. Smith of Keene, Roxanne M. Jones of Charlottesville and Hermina "Tina" Jones of Newport News; his sister Mary Howard Jones of Browns Cove; his siblings-in-law, Lloyd Payne Goochland, Gary Payne of Richmond, Patricia P. Harris, Roslyn P. Hawkins and Cassandra P. Pace; and his friend Phil Estes of Charlottesville. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.
