She was predeceased by : her parents, Joseph Harry and Grace Fitts Scales; her husbands, George Hairston and Wilbur Montgomery Sims; and her siblings, Edgar Forrest Scales, Joseph Harry Scales and Elizabeth Scales DeShazo.

She is survived by : her children, Mary Anne Hairston Davis of New Haven, Connecticut, George Hairston, Jr. (Patricia) of Spartanburg and Peter Perkins Hairston (Melissa); her grandchildren, Robert George Hairston and Virginia Eleanor Hairston of North Oaks, Minnesota; her sister Grace Scales Evans of West Friendship, Maryland; her stepsons, Edward Sims (Carol) of Orlando and Wilbur M. Sims, Jr. (Charlotte) of Richmond, Virginia; and also Mollie Wooding.
